Heart Rate Variability (HRV) refers to the variability or difference in the length of time between heartbeats. Heart rate is a function of both branches of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) increases the heart rate per minute by shortening the length of each beat so that they occur more often.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS) reduces the heart rate per minute by increasing the length of each beat so that they occur less often.

“Heart rate per minute” is the average number of beats per minute. The length of each beat may vary from one beat to the next. This variation is heart rate variability.
